Plaksha University: A New-Age Technology University Reimagining Engineering Education in India

India’s higher-education landscape has traditionally been dominated by institutions such as the IITs, IISc, NITs and established private universities. Over the past few years, however, a new category of institutions has begun to emerge—universities designed specifically around artificial intelligence, emerging technologies, entrepreneurship and interdisciplinary learning.

One of the most prominent names in this space is Plaksha University, a technology-focused university located in Mohali, Punjab. Founded by a community of more than 100 entrepreneurs, business leaders and technology professionals, Plaksha was conceived with an ambitious objective: to rethink how engineering and technology education should work in the 21st century.

What is Plaksha University?

Plaksha University is a relatively young institution focused on technology, engineering, research and innovation. Rather than following the conventional model in which students choose a narrowly defined engineering discipline immediately after entering college, Plaksha has built an interdisciplinary curriculum that combines technology with design, humanities, social sciences, entrepreneurship and real-world problem solving.

The university’s undergraduate programme is a four-year BTech programme. Students begin with a common foundation called the Freshmore curriculum, which extends across the first three semesters. This allows students to develop fundamentals in mathematics, science, computation, humanities, design and problem-solving before selecting their specialised major.

This approach is intended to address an important challenge facing engineering education: technology is increasingly crossing traditional disciplinary boundaries. Artificial intelligence, robotics, biotechnology, climate technology and financial technology, for example, require knowledge from several fields rather than one isolated engineering discipline.

Who Founded Plaksha?

One of the most distinctive aspects of Plaksha is its founding model.

The university was not established around a single industrial house or an individual education entrepreneur. Its founding community consists of more than 100 entrepreneurs, technology professionals, business leaders and philanthropists. The idea originated from discussions beginning in 2015 about how technology education could be transformed. A not-for-profit foundation was subsequently established in 2017 to develop the concept.

The broader ecosystem includes prominent business and technology leaders as well as academics associated with institutions such as MIT, Harvard, Penn Engineering, Cornell, UC Berkeley, Purdue, Cambridge, IITs and IISc. Plaksha says its founders are also actively involved in mentoring students and helping shape the university’s development.

This industry and academic network is an important part of Plaksha’s identity.

What Can Students Study at Plaksha?

Plaksha currently offers four interdisciplinary BTech degrees:

  1. Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence
  2. Data Science, Economics & Business
  3. Robotics & Autonomous Systems
  4. Biological Systems Engineering

The programmes are designed around emerging areas where engineering intersects with other disciplines.

For example, Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence goes beyond conventional programming and computer science to explore algorithms, intelligent systems and the interaction between humans and machines. Robotics combines engineering and computation with autonomous systems, while Biological Systems Engineering brings technology into biological and life-science applications.

The Data Science, Economics & Business programme is another example of the university’s interdisciplinary philosophy, combining quantitative and computational skills with economics and business.

The Freshmore Curriculum

The Freshmore curriculum is central to the Plaksha educational model.

Instead of asking students to specialise immediately, the university uses the first three semesters to provide a common academic foundation. Students study areas including mathematics, sciences, computing and humanities while also being exposed to design, innovation and practical problem solving.

The underlying idea is that tomorrow’s engineers will need more than technical knowledge. They will have to understand how technology affects businesses, societies and people.

After the foundation stage, students select their major and progressively develop greater technical depth. The fourth year provides opportunities to apply knowledge to real-world problems.

Research and Entrepreneurship

Research and entrepreneurship are also major components of Plaksha’s institutional vision.

The university describes itself as a research-oriented technology university and has developed relationships with institutions including UC Berkeley, Purdue, UC San Diego, Cornell, Penn Engineering, IIT Kanpur and IISc Bengaluru.

Entrepreneurship is similarly integrated into the student experience. Students are encouraged to work on projects, develop prototypes and explore startup ideas rather than viewing their degree solely as preparation for conventional employment.

This is particularly relevant for students interested in artificial intelligence, robotics, deep technology and emerging technology businesses.

What Are Plaksha University’s Placement Results?

Because Plaksha is a young university, its first graduating class provides an important early indication of its career outcomes.

The university’s founding BTech cohort graduated in 2025. According to Plaksha’s published placement information, students entering industry roles secured offers, with the university reporting an average compensation of approximately ₹20 lakh per annum and a median of ₹17 lakh per annum. The reported compensation range was ₹8 lakh to ₹65 lakh, depending on the university’s current reporting period.

Recruiters mentioned by the university include Boston Consulting Group, McKinsey & Company, D.E. Shaw, Arcesium, Flipkart, Fractal, Wayfair, Info Edge and Jefferies, among others. Graduates entered areas including software engineering, artificial intelligence and machine learning, data science, consulting, product management, finance and business analysis.

The university also reports that a significant proportion of its first cohort chose higher education and research. Students received admissions to institutions including Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Chicago, UC San Diego, King’s College London and TU Delft.

These figures are university-reported outcomes from a relatively small and young institution, so they should be viewed in that context rather than directly compared with decades of placement data from much larger universities.

A Young University With a Different Philosophy

Plaksha’s greatest distinction may not simply be its placement numbers. Its more fundamental proposition is that engineering education needs to change alongside technology.

Traditional engineering degrees were largely organised around established disciplines such as mechanical, electrical, civil and computer engineering. Modern technological challenges increasingly combine several fields.

An autonomous vehicle, for example, requires computer science, artificial intelligence, electronics, mechanical engineering, sensors, economics and human-centred design. Similarly, healthcare technology may require biology, computing, engineering and data science.

Plaksha’s curriculum is designed around this intersection.

What Makes Plaksha Different From a Conventional Engineering College?

There are several important differences.

First, interdisciplinary education is built into the undergraduate curriculum rather than treated as an optional addition.

Second, the university has a strong technology and entrepreneurship orientation, with an emphasis on emerging fields rather than only conventional engineering branches.

Third, its founding community includes technology entrepreneurs and business leaders, giving the university a strong connection with industry.

Fourth, Plaksha is deliberately building its academic ecosystem from the ground up. As a young institution, it does not have the legacy structure of older universities and therefore has greater flexibility in designing programmes and teaching methods.

Is Plaksha an IIT?

No. Plaksha University is a separate private university and is not an IIT.

It should therefore be evaluated on its own characteristics—curriculum, faculty, research opportunities, student profile, career outcomes, financial aid and long-term reputation—rather than simply being placed into the IIT/NIT framework.

Its young age is also important. Unlike IITs, which have several decades of alumni and institutional history, Plaksha is still building its reputation and alumni network.

What Does the Future Hold?

Plaksha is expanding beyond its initial undergraduate offering. Its recent institutional developments include a School of AI & Computer Science and new programmes and research initiatives. The university has also announced an MSc in Artificial Intelligence in partnership with Penn Engineering.

The university is therefore attempting to build something larger than an undergraduate engineering college: an ecosystem combining undergraduate education, postgraduate study, research, entrepreneurship and industry collaboration.

Its success over the long term will depend on factors such as faculty quality, research output, graduate outcomes, alumni achievements, industry relationships and the ability to maintain academic standards as the university expands.

Conclusion

Plaksha University represents an interesting experiment in Indian higher education.

Rather than reproducing the conventional engineering-college model, it has attempted to create a technology university around interdisciplinary learning, artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, research and real-world problem solving.

Its first BTech graduating cohort has produced encouraging career and higher-education outcomes, although the institution remains too young to have the long-term alumni record and institutional history associated with India’s established technology universities.

For students interested in AI, computer science, robotics, data science, entrepreneurship and emerging technologies, Plaksha offers a distinctly different educational model. Its long-term standing in India’s higher-education ecosystem will ultimately be shaped by the achievements of its students, researchers and alumni in the years ahead.
