Budhendra Kumar Jain was born on 5 December 1948 in Satna district of Madhya Pradesh, India. Jain completed his early schooling at Government Venkat No. 1 School in Satna. Motivated by a desire to serve society through medicine, he pursued his medical studies at Shyam Shah Medical College in Rewa, where he earned his MBBS degree in 1973. After completing his undergraduate medical education, he went on to specialize in ophthalmology. He obtained his postgraduate medical training from Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College and General Hospital in Mumbai in 1979.
During his years of training, Jain developed a keen interest in eye care and cataract treatment. At that time, millions of Indians suffered from preventable blindness due to lack of access to treatment. This reality inspired him to dedicate his career to ophthalmology and community-based healthcare.
Career in Ophthalmology
After completing his postgraduate studies, Dr. Jain joined the Sadguru Netra Chikitsalaya in Chitrakoot, a charitable eye hospital established by the Shri Sadguru Seva Sangh Trust. Over the years, he rose to become the medical director of the hospital, leading its expansion into one of the most respected institutions for community ophthalmology in India.
Under his leadership, the hospital adopted a unique model of healthcare delivery that combined advanced medical technology with compassionate service for the poor. The institution became known for providing high-quality eye surgeries at little or no cost to patients from rural and tribal communities.
Dr. Jain focused particularly on cataract surgeries, which remain one of the leading causes of blindness in developing countries. By organizing large-scale surgical programs and outreach initiatives, he helped thousands of patients regain their eyesight each year.
