Prof. Dr. Ram Chet Chaudhary: A Pioneer in Agricultural Science and Rural Development
Prof. Dr. Ram Chet Chaudhary stands as one of India’s most distinguished agricultural scientists, whose lifelong contributions have significantly shaped global agricultural research, food security, and rural development. With decades of experience spanning academia, international organizations, and grassroots initiatives, his work reflects a rare blend of scientific excellence and humanitarian commitment.
Born on 8 November 1944, Dr. Chaudhary’s academic journey laid a strong foundation for his illustrious career. He completed his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University in 1963, followed by a Master’s degree in Agriculture in 1965 from the Government Agriculture College, Kanpur. His academic pursuits culminated in a Ph.D. in Agricultural Botany from Agra University, with research conducted at the CSIR–National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow. Further enhancing his expertise, he completed his post-doctoral studies at the Technical University of Munich, Germany.
Dr. Chaudhary began his professional career in 1969 as an Assistant Professor at G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar. His academic brilliance and leadership soon elevated him to positions such as Associate Professor in Plant Breeding and Associate Director of the Crops Research Centre. These early roles allowed him to deepen his research in crop improvement, particularly in plant breeding and genetic enhancement.
His career trajectory then expanded into significant leadership roles, including serving as Chief Scientist and Rice Director at Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University, Pusa, Bihar. His expertise in rice breeding gained international recognition, leading to his appointment as a Rice Specialist with the World Bank in Nigeria. This was followed by a decade-long tenure at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), where he worked as a Plant Breeder and served as the INGER Global Coordinator. These roles placed him at the forefront of global agricultural innovation, particularly in improving rice varieties to meet the food demands of growing populations.
The final phase of his formal career was with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, where he worked across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Through this role, Dr. Chaudhary contributed to agricultural development and food security in more than 40 countries, helping nations adopt sustainable farming practices and improve crop productivity. His work during this period highlights his global impact on addressing hunger and promoting agricultural sustainability.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Dr. Chaudhary’s career is his contribution to agricultural research and knowledge dissemination. He has authored more than 390 publications, including 58 books and bulletins, and 244 research papers published in national and international journals. His books, particularly in the field of plant breeding, have received recognition from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and are widely used as textbooks in agricultural universities. His work has influenced generations of students, researchers, and farmers, bridging the gap between academic knowledge and practical application.
Dr. Chaudhary’s scientific contributions extend beyond theory into tangible outcomes that have directly benefited farmers. He has developed over 150 rice varieties, many of which are cultivated worldwide, with 21 varieties being widely grown in India. These innovations have significantly enhanced crop yield, disease resistance, and adaptability to diverse environmental conditions.
Among his most celebrated achievements is his work on Kalanamak rice, a traditional and aromatic variety that was on the verge of extinction. Through dedicated research and development, Dr. Chaudhary successfully revived this heritage crop, transforming it into a valuable agricultural commodity. Today, Kalanamak rice is not only cultivated extensively but is also exported, contributing to increased income for farmers. His efforts ensured its protection under the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights (PPV&FRA) Act and secured a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for 11 districts of Uttar Pradesh until 2030. This achievement stands as a model of how scientific intervention can preserve biodiversity while enhancing economic value.
Even after retiring from international assignments, Dr. Chaudhary continues to serve society through his role as Chairman of the Participatory Rural Development Foundation (PRDF) in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. He founded this organization with the aim of applying his knowledge and experience to grassroots development. Through PRDF, he promotes sustainable agriculture, organic farming, and rural empowerment, ensuring that scientific advancements reach the farming community directly.
His contributions have been recognized with numerous accolades. Dr. Chaudhary has received 57 national and international awards, medals, and honors for his work in agricultural science and rural development. These recognitions underscore not only his scientific achievements but also his dedication to improving livelihoods and ensuring food security.
In addition to his research and organizational work, Dr. Chaudhary has played a vital role in mentoring future generations. He serves on the advisory boards of several universities and has been appointed as a mentor at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University’s Institute of Agriculture and Natural Sciences. The institution has also established the “Dr. Ram Chet Chaudhary Gold Medal” to honor top postgraduate students in agriculture, reflecting his lasting legacy in education and academic excellence.
