List of Train Accidents Under UPA Regime

Unfortunately, train accidents have been part of our railway journey since long. Though lately accidents have come down drastically, but still it’s a long way to go. Till we go accident free and even single life is not lost unless it’s the person’s fault of not crossing the track while train is moving, we need to hold our government to account. During the Modi era from June 2014 to the present, there have been 638 train accidents in India resulting in approximately 346, with at least 721 injuries while during UPA era 1,711 railway accidents, resulting in 2,453 deaths and 4,486 injuries​

Here is a list of notable train accidents in India during the UPA era from May 2005 to May 2014, including the number of people killed and injured:

  1. October 29, 2005 – Velugonda Train Derailment:
  • Location: Andhra Pradesh
  • Casualties: At least 77 people killed
  • Details: Several coaches of a passenger train derailed due to flash floods.

2. November 20, 2005 – Veligonda Train Disaster:

    • Location: Andhra Pradesh
    • Casualties: Over 100 killed
    • Details: The accident occurred when the Delta Fast Passenger train derailed after hitting a fallen boulder.

    3. February 13, 2009 – Jnaneswari Express Derailment:

      • Location: West Bengal
      • Casualties: 148 killed, 180 injured
      • Details: The train derailed and was subsequently hit by a goods train, attributed to sabotage by Maoist insurgents.

      4. May 28, 2010 – Gyaneshwari Express Derailment:

        • Location: West Bengal
        • Casualties: 148 killed, over 200 injured
        • Details: The train was derailed by suspected sabotage and then hit by a freight train.

        5. July 10, 2011 – Fatehpur Train Derailment:

          • Location: Uttar Pradesh
          • Casualties: Around 70 killed, over 300 injured
          • Details: The Howrah-Kalka Mail derailed near Malwan station.

          6. May 22, 2012 – Hampi Express Collision:

            • Location: Andhra Pradesh
            • Casualties: 25 killed, 43 injured
            • Details: The Hampi Express collided with a stationary freight train.

            7. July 30, 2012 – Tamil Nadu Express Fire:

              • Location: Andhra Pradesh
              • Casualties: 32 killed, 25 injured
              • Details: A fire broke out in a coach of the Tamil Nadu Express near Nellore.

              8. May 26, 2014 – Gorakhdham Express Collision:

                • Location: Uttar Pradesh
                • Casualties: 25 killed, more than 50 injured
                • Details: The Gorakhdham Express collided with a halted goods train near Khalilabad station.

                During the UPA era, there were a total of 1,711 railway accidents, resulting in 2,453 deaths and 4,486 injuries

                During the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) era, the positions of Railway Minister were held by several individuals across UPA-1 and UPA-2.

                UPA-1 (2004-2009):

                1. Lalu Prasad Yadav (May 23, 2004 – May 22, 2009): Lalu Prasad Yadav served as the Railway Minister throughout the entire UPA-1 term. Under his leadership, Indian Railways saw several reforms and claimed a turnaround in profitability.

                UPA-2 (2009-2014):

                1. Mamata Banerjee (May 31, 2009 – May 19, 2011): Mamata Banerjee took charge of the Ministry of Railways at the beginning of UPA-2. She focused on introducing several new trains and projects.
                2. Dinesh Trivedi (July 12, 2011 – March 18, 2012): After Mamata Banerjee left to become the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dinesh Trivedi, also from the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), took over as Railway Minister. His tenure is noted for the controversial decision to increase passenger fares.
                3. Mukul Roy (March 20, 2012 – September 21, 2012): Mukul Roy succeeded Dinesh Trivedi and served as Railway Minister for a brief period. He focused on continuing the projects initiated by his predecessors.
                4. C. P. Joshi (September 22, 2012 – June 17, 2013): C. P. Joshi served as an interim Railway Minister in addition to his role as the Minister of Road Transport and Highways.
                5. Mallikarjun Kharge (June 17, 2013 – May 26, 2014): Mallikarjun Kharge was the last Railway Minister during the UPA-2 term. He introduced several new trains and initiatives aimed at improving railway infrastructure and safety.
