In January 1975, while participating in a physical test during the naval selection process, Ramakrishnan suffered a severe fall that damaged his cervical spine. The injury resulted in paralysis below the neck and permanently altered the course of his life. Doctors informed him that he would never regain normal physical mobility.

The young engineering student suddenly found himself facing immense physical and emotional challenges. He underwent extensive treatment at military hospitals in Bengaluru and Pune.
