Two-Wheeler Sales Report September 2026: Honda, Hero and TVS Drive Strong Growth
India’s two-wheeler industry delivered a strong performance in September 2026, with several leading manufacturers reporting substantial year-on-year growth. Motorcycles and scooters continued to benefit from improving consumer demand, while electric two-wheelers emerged as one of the fastest-growing segments of the market.
The month was particularly notable for Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India, TVS Motor, Hero MotoCorp and Royal Enfield, all of which reported healthy sales growth. At the same time, Bajaj Auto’s domestic two-wheeler performance was weaker, although its export business remained extremely strong.
The September numbers indicate that India’s two-wheeler market continues to expand, with a combination of commuter motorcycles, premium bikes, scooters and electric vehicles driving the industry’s growth.
Hero MotoCorp Remains a Major Force
Hero MotoCorp continued to be one of India’s largest two-wheeler manufacturers in September 2026.
The company sold 7,66,348 motorcycles and scooters globally, compared with 6,87,220 units in September 2025. This represents an increase of approximately 11.5% year-on-year.
Hero’s domestic sales were particularly strong. The company sold 7,39,018 units in India, compared with 6,47,582 units a year earlier, representing growth of around 14%.
Motorcycles remained the core of Hero’s business, with nearly 6.66 lakh motorcycles sold during the month. However, the company’s scooter business showed an even more impressive improvement. Scooter sales reached more than 1 lakh units, rising by over 64% from the previous year.
This indicates that Hero is gradually strengthening its position in the scooter market while continuing to dominate the commuter motorcycle segment.
Honda Records Strong Growth
Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India delivered one of the strongest performances among the major two-wheeler manufacturers.
Honda recorded total sales of 7,06,266 units in September 2026, compared with 5,68,164 units in September 2025. This represents approximately 24% year-on-year growth.
Domestic sales increased even more strongly. Honda sold 6,36,768 units in India, compared with 5,05,693 units in September 2025, translating into approximately 26% growth. Exports increased by around 11% to 69,498 units.
Honda’s strong performance demonstrates the continued popularity of its scooter and motorcycle portfolio. Activa remains one of India’s most important two-wheeler products, while motorcycles such as the Shine family provide Honda with substantial volumes in the commuter segment.
The company is also expanding its premium and alternative-fuel offerings, giving it opportunities to participate in India’s changing two-wheeler market.
TVS Motor Continues Its Rapid Expansion
TVS Motor was another major winner in September 2026.
The company recorded 6,45,955 two-wheeler sales, compared with 5,23,923 units in September 2025. This represents growth of approximately 23% year-on-year.
Domestic two-wheeler sales increased 17% to 4,82,073 units, while exports grew by an impressive 48% to 1,63,882 units.
TVS’s performance is particularly important because the company has been gaining market share across motorcycles, scooters and electric vehicles.
Its electric two-wheeler business was another major highlight. TVS sold 65,799 electric two-wheelers in September, more than double the 31,266 units sold in September 2025. That represents approximately 110% year-on-year growth.
The company’s iQube electric scooter has become an important part of its growth strategy, while its Apache motorcycle range continues to provide strong volumes in the premium motorcycle segment.
Bajaj Auto Faces Domestic Pressure
Bajaj Auto’s September performance was more mixed.
The company recorded total two-wheeler sales of around 4.51 lakh units, representing approximately 5% growth compared with September 2025. However, the headline number hides a significant difference between domestic and international markets.
Bajaj’s domestic two-wheeler sales declined approximately 12% year-on-year to 2,39,771 units. At the same time, two-wheeler exports increased by approximately 34% to 2,11,723 units.
This makes Bajaj one of the more interesting companies to watch in the September sales data.
Its international business remains a major strength, but the decline in domestic motorcycle volumes contrasts sharply with the growth recorded by Honda, Hero and TVS.
The September numbers also had an immediate impact on investor sentiment, with Bajaj Auto shares coming under pressure following the sales announcement.
Royal Enfield Achieves Record Sales
Royal Enfield had an excellent September.
The company sold 1,33,958 motorcycles, its highest-ever monthly sales figure. Sales increased by approximately 8% compared with 1,24,328 units in September 2025.
Domestic sales increased 7% to 1,21,326 units, while exports rose 17% to 12,632 motorcycles.
The performance is significant because Royal Enfield operates primarily in the premium and mid-size motorcycle categories rather than the mass commuter segment.
The company is benefiting from strong demand for its Classic, Hunter, Bullet, Meteor, Guerrilla and Himalayan ranges.
The newly introduced Himalayan 440 has also generated considerable interest, with the company reporting a strong booking pipeline. Royal Enfield’s continued expansion in the 350cc-650cc motorcycle segment is helping it maintain a strong position in India’s premium motorcycle market.
Electric Two-Wheelers Are Growing Rapidly
Perhaps the biggest structural change in India’s two-wheeler industry is the rapid expansion of electric vehicles.
Electric two-wheeler registrations reached approximately 1.97 lakh units in September 2026, taking January-September registrations beyond 15 lakh units. The segment has been growing rapidly as consumers become increasingly comfortable with electric scooters and motorcycles.
TVS, Bajaj, Ather and Hero’s Vida have emerged as important players in the electric two-wheeler market.
TVS in particular has demonstrated impressive momentum. Its September electric two-wheeler sales more than doubled year-on-year, showing that established manufacturers are increasingly capable of competing successfully against pure electric-vehicle companies.
This is an important development for the industry because the electric two-wheeler market is gradually moving from an early-adopter segment into a mainstream consumer category.
The Scooter Market Remains Important
Another important trend visible in September is the continued strength of scooters.
Honda remains one of the biggest players in India’s scooter market, while TVS has rapidly expanded its scooter portfolio through products such as the Jupiter and iQube.
Hero’s scooter sales also grew sharply during September, increasing more than 64% year-on-year.
Scooters are particularly important because they appeal to a wide range of urban and semi-urban consumers. Their automatic transmissions, storage capacity and ease of use make them attractive for daily commuting.
The increasing availability of electric scooters is also providing consumers with another alternative.
Rural Demand Remains an Important Factor
Two-wheelers have traditionally been closely linked to rural and semi-urban consumption because motorcycles provide relatively affordable personal transportation.
However, September’s performance also showed that demand is not uniform across manufacturers.
Reuters reported that weaker rural conditions affected some parts of the two-wheeler market, while urban consumption remained comparatively resilient. Bajaj’s domestic decline contrasted with the stronger performance of Hero, Honda and TVS.
The upcoming festive period will therefore be important for determining whether the September momentum can continue across the entire industry.
What September 2026 Means for India’s Two-Wheeler Industry
The September numbers provide several important conclusions.
First, Hero MotoCorp remains a dominant force, particularly in motorcycles and increasingly in scooters.
Second, Honda is experiencing strong volume growth, with domestic sales rising 26%.
Third, TVS Motor continues to gain momentum, helped by both conventional two-wheelers and electric vehicles.
Fourth, Royal Enfield is demonstrating the strength of India’s premium motorcycle market, achieving its highest-ever monthly sales.
Finally, Bajaj Auto’s domestic performance requires attention, despite its strong export business.
The electric segment is also becoming impossible to ignore. With nearly two lakh electric two-wheelers registered in September alone, EVs are becoming an increasingly important component of India’s overall two-wheeler industry.
Conclusion
The September 2026 two-wheeler sales report presents a largely positive picture of India’s motorcycle and scooter industry.
Honda recorded particularly strong growth, while Hero MotoCorp continued to command enormous volumes. TVS Motor’s combination of conventional and electric two-wheelers made it one of the strongest performers of the month. Royal Enfield achieved a record monthly sales figure, demonstrating continued demand for premium motorcycles.
Bajaj Auto was the notable exception, with domestic two-wheeler sales declining despite strong exports.
The larger story, however, is the changing nature of India’s two-wheeler market. Motorcycles remain the backbone of the industry, scooters continue to expand their appeal, premium motorcycles are growing rapidly and electric two-wheelers are moving into the mainstream.
With the festive season ahead, October and November 2026 could provide an even clearer indication of the strength of India’s two-wheeler demand.
Overall, September’s figures suggest that India’s two-wheeler industry remains on a strong growth trajectory, although the performance of individual manufacturers is becoming increasingly differentiated.
