Amai Mahalinga Naik: The “Tunnel Man” Who Turned a Barren Hill into a Green Paradise

India’s agricultural history is filled with stories of ordinary people achieving extraordinary things through determination and innovation. Among such inspiring personalities stands Amai Mahalinga Naik, a farmer from Karnataka who transformed a dry and barren hill into a thriving organic farm using sheer hard work and traditional wisdom. Popularly known as the “Tunnel Man of Karnataka,” Naik became a national inspiration after receiving the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2022 for his remarkable contribution to sustainable agriculture.

Born in Adyanadka village in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka, Amai Mahalinga Naik came from a humble background. Unlike scientists or engineers trained in universities, he had little formal education and worked as an agricultural labourer during his early years. He earned his livelihood by climbing coconut and arecanut trees and doing farm-related work in nearby villages. Life was difficult, and opportunities were limited, but Naik possessed something more valuable than resources — determination and patience.

In the late 1970s, a local landlord named Mahabala Bhat donated around two acres of barren hilltop land to Naik after being impressed by his sincerity and hard work. The land, however, was rocky, dry, and considered unsuitable for farming. Most people would have abandoned such terrain, but Naik saw possibility where others saw failure. His dream was to create a fertile farm and secure a better future through agriculture. The greatest challenge before him was water. Without a reliable source of irrigation, cultivation on the hill was nearly impossible.

Instead of giving up, Naik relied on a traditional water-harvesting technique used in parts of coastal Karnataka known as “Suranga.” Surangas are horizontal tunnels dug into hills to tap underground water channels. The technique is ancient, physically demanding, and highly uncertain because there is no guarantee of finding water. Yet Naik decided to pursue this difficult path with unwavering faith.

His journey was filled with failures. Naik dug tunnel after tunnel into the hard laterite rock hills surrounding his farm. His first few attempts failed completely. Many villagers ridiculed him and believed he was wasting his time and energy. Digging through rocky hills manually without modern machines required enormous physical strength and mental resilience. However, Naik refused to stop. He continued his work year after year, believing that persistence would eventually reward him.

Success finally arrived during his sixth attempt. After digging a tunnel nearly 315 feet long, Naik struck a hidden underground water source. Water began flowing naturally from the hill without any electricity or pumping system. This breakthrough completely changed the future of his farm. Encouraged by the success, he dug additional tunnels to ensure water availability for irrigation as well as household use.

What makes Naik’s achievement extraordinary is that he accomplished almost everything single-handedly. He not only dug tunnels but also built nearly 300 percolation trenches around the hills to conserve rainwater and improve groundwater recharge. Carrying thousands of heavy laterite stones himself, he constructed revetments and a large water tank with a storage capacity of around 12,000 litres. These efforts gradually transformed the once lifeless hill into a lush green ecosystem.

Today, Naik’s farm is a thriving model of organic agriculture. The land supports hundreds of arecanut palms, coconut trees, cashew trees, banana plants, and pepper vines. He also practices eco-friendly farming methods and maintains livestock. In addition, he produces Azolla, a nutritious aquatic plant used as feed for cattle, and engages in beekeeping activities. His farm demonstrates how traditional knowledge and sustainable techniques can create self-sufficient agricultural systems without dependence on expensive technology.

Amai Mahalinga Naik’s story is especially inspiring because it highlights the power of indigenous wisdom. At a time when agriculture increasingly depends on electricity, chemical fertilizers, and large-scale mechanisation, Naik proved that environmentally sustainable methods can still produce remarkable results. His irrigation system works without electricity, making it both economical and eco-friendly. In an era of climate change and water scarcity, his methods offer valuable lessons for farmers across India.

Over the years, Naik’s farm became widely known among agricultural experts, researchers, and farmers. Agricultural writer and editor Shree Padre played an important role in bringing his work to public attention. Visitors from different parts of India and even foreign countries started visiting the farm to study his innovative techniques. Many considered him a symbol of perseverance and grassroots innovation. His success demonstrated that practical experience and local knowledge can sometimes rival formal scientific expertise.

Recognising his exceptional contribution to agriculture and sustainable farming, the Government of India honoured Amai Mahalinga Naik with the Padma Shri award in 2022. The award acknowledged not only his farming success but also his lifelong dedication to environmental conservation and rural innovation. For a man who once worked as a daily wage labourer and struggled to survive, receiving one of India’s highest civilian honours became a moment of immense pride and inspiration.

Naik is often called a “One-Man Army” because of the sheer scale of work he performed independently. His life teaches the importance of patience, optimism, and hard work. While many people seek quick success, Naik spent decades slowly shaping the land with his own hands. He faced repeated failures, physical hardship, and social ridicule, but he never lost faith in his mission. His journey reminds society that real transformation often requires years of dedication and sacrifice.

Beyond agriculture, Amai Mahalinga Naik represents a broader idea of harmony between humans and nature. Instead of exploiting natural resources recklessly, he worked with the landscape, respected traditional practices, and focused on sustainability.
