Chandraswami: The Rise and Fall of India’s Most Controversial Godman
Few spiritual figures in modern Indian history have generated as much fascination and controversy as Chandraswami. Revered by some as a mystic possessing extraordinary spiritual powers and criticized by others as a manipulative power broker, Chandraswami occupied a unique position where religion, politics, business, and international diplomacy often intersected. During the 1980s and early 1990s, he was among the most influential self-styled spiritual leaders in India, attracting politicians, business tycoons, celebrities, and foreign dignitaries from around the world.
His remarkable rise to prominence and equally dramatic fall continue to make him one of India’s most discussed and controversial godmen.
Early Life
Chandraswami was born as Nemi Chand Jain in 1948 into a Jain family in Rajasthan, although he spent much of his early life in Hyderabad. From a young age, he reportedly developed a deep interest in spirituality, meditation, and tantric practices. Unlike many traditional religious scholars, Chandraswami did not emerge from an established monastic lineage. Instead, he claimed to have acquired mystical knowledge through years of meditation and spiritual discipline.
As he gained followers, he adopted the name “Chandraswami” and established himself as a spiritual guru with expertise in tantric rituals, astrology, meditation, and occult practices.
Rise to Fame
By the late 1970s and early 1980s, Chandraswami had become a well-known figure among India’s wealthy elite. His ashram in Delhi gradually transformed into a meeting point for politicians, industrialists, bureaucrats, and foreign visitors.
Unlike conventional spiritual leaders who focused primarily on religious teachings, Chandraswami cultivated an image as someone who could provide guidance on business, politics, elections, and international affairs. Many influential individuals reportedly sought his advice before making important decisions.
His reputation spread rapidly, leading to an expanding network of high-profile followers.
Connections with Political Leaders
Perhaps the most controversial aspect of Chandraswami’s career was his close association with several prominent political leaders.
Over the years, his name was linked with leaders across different political parties. He was known to have connections with former Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao, former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar, and several senior bureaucrats and ministers. Although many politicians acknowledged meeting him, the exact nature of these relationships often remained a matter of speculation.
Critics argued that Chandraswami had become an unofficial power broker who could facilitate introductions, influence appointments, and connect politicians with influential businessmen.
Supporters, however, maintained that political leaders merely sought his spiritual blessings, as they did from many religious figures.
International Influence
Chandraswami’s influence extended far beyond India.
One of his most famous international followers was Saudi billionaire and arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi, who reportedly regarded Chandraswami as his spiritual guide. Their friendship attracted global media attention because Khashoggi was one of the wealthiest and most influential businessmen of his era.
Chandraswami was also associated with members of royal families, wealthy entrepreneurs, diplomats, and celebrities from Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the United States. Reports over the years linked him with personalities such as the Sultan of Brunei and Hollywood actress Elizabeth Taylor, although the depth of these relationships varied.
These international connections significantly enhanced Chandraswami’s reputation as a guru with extraordinary global influence.
The Pamella Bordes Controversy
One of the most publicized episodes involving Chandraswami concerned former Miss India Pamella Bordes, who became the centre of a political scandal in Britain during 1989.
Various reports claimed that Chandraswami introduced Bordes to influential businessmen, including Adnan Khashoggi. Bordes herself later alleged that Chandraswami helped her gain access to powerful international figures.
However, Chandraswami and his associates denied many of these claims, arguing that media reports exaggerated his role.
The controversy nevertheless reinforced his image as a man with unparalleled access to the world’s elite.
Legal Troubles
Beginning in the early 1990s, Chandraswami’s fortunes began to change.
He became the subject of numerous investigations involving alleged financial irregularities, violations of foreign exchange regulations, tax matters, and cheating complaints. Several agencies, including the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED), investigated him at different times.
One of the most widely reported allegations involved businessman Lakhubhai Pathak, who accused Chandraswami of cheating him by promising political influence in exchange for money. The case attracted national attention because it also mentioned senior political figures.
Over the years, Chandraswami faced multiple court proceedings. However, many cases ended in acquittals, were dismissed, or could not be conclusively proven. Some allegations remained unresolved in the public imagination despite legal outcomes.
Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Speculation
Following the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991, Chandraswami’s name occasionally surfaced in media reports and political discussions.
Investigative agencies questioned several individuals connected to the case, and Chandraswami himself came under scrutiny due to his extensive network of contacts.
However, it is important to note that no court convicted Chandraswami for involvement in the assassination, and no judicial finding established his participation in the conspiracy.
Despite this, media speculation surrounding these investigations continued for many years, contributing to his controversial public image.
Decline of Influence
As legal challenges increased and political circumstances changed during the late 1990s, Chandraswami’s influence steadily declined.
Many former associates distanced themselves from him. His once-busy Delhi ashram gradually lost much of its political significance. Media attention shifted from portraying him as a powerful kingmaker to focusing on his legal battles and declining health.
The aura of mystery that had surrounded him for decades slowly faded.
Death and Legacy
Chandraswami passed away on 23 May 2017 at the age of 69 after suffering from multiple health complications.
His death marked the end of one of the most extraordinary chapters in India’s political and spiritual history.
Even today, opinions about Chandraswami remain sharply divided. Admirers remember him as a spiritually gifted individual with remarkable intuition and international influence. Critics view him as a symbol of the dangerous intersection between religion, politics, money, and power.
Regardless of one’s perspective, few can deny that Chandraswami left an enduring imprint on modern Indian history. His life reflected how spiritual authority can evolve into political influence, and how public perception can change dramatically when controversy overtakes charisma.
More than three decades after reaching the peak of his influence, Chandraswami continues to be the subject of books, documentaries, investigative reports, and political discussions. His story remains a fascinating example of ambition, spirituality, power, and the complexities of public life in modern India.
