Dr. Chandrashekhar Meshram: A Life Dedicated to Neurology, Public Service, and Social Impact
Dr. Chandrashekhar Mahadeorao Meshram is one of India’s most distinguished neurologists and a respected public intellectual whose contributions go far beyond medicine. Known for his excellence in clinical neurology, medical research, public awareness, academic leadership, and social service, he has built a legacy that combines scientific achievement with humanitarian commitment. His life story is a shining example of how dedication, knowledge, and compassion can transform society.
Born on 9 July 1954, Dr. Meshram pursued his education with determination and discipline. He completed his MBBS degree from Government Medical College, Nagpur, one of the respected medical institutions in central India. Driven by a passion for internal medicine and neuroscience, he later obtained an MD in Medicine and then completed a DM in Neurology from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh. This advanced training prepared him for a remarkable career in one of the most complex and demanding branches of medicine.
Neurology deals with disorders of the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles. It requires exceptional diagnostic skill and deep scientific understanding. Dr. Meshram emerged as a leading specialist in this field and earned widespread respect for his ability to diagnose and treat complicated neurological conditions. He currently serves as Neurologist and Director of the Brain and Mind Institute in Nagpur, where he has helped countless patients suffering from disorders such as stroke, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, headaches, autism, and infections affecting the nervous system.
His reputation is not limited to India. Dr. Meshram represented the nation in several international meetings of the World Federation of Neurology held in cities such as Bangkok, Marrakesh, Stockholm, Vienna, Santiago, Kyoto, and Dubai. These prestigious gatherings bring together leading experts from around the world to discuss advances in neurological science and healthcare policy. His participation at these forums highlights the global recognition of his expertise.
Dr. Meshram also served in important committees of the World Federation of Neurology, including the Constitution and Bylaws Committee and the Scientific Program Committee. He later held the high office of Trustee and President of the Tropical and Geographical Neurology Specialty Group. This was a landmark achievement, as he became the first Indian neurologist in 65 years to serve as a Trustee of this globally respected organization representing 123 member countries. His appointment reflected not only personal excellence but also India’s growing stature in global medicine.
Within India, Dr. Meshram has played a major leadership role in the medical community. He served as National President of the Indian Academy of Neurology during 2013–14. Under his leadership, the academy strengthened academic programs, encouraged professional collaboration, and promoted neurological education across the country. His leadership helped inspire younger doctors and improve standards in neurological care.
One of the most admirable aspects of Dr. Meshram’s career is his dedication to public health education. He strongly believes that medical knowledge should not remain confined to hospitals and academic institutions. For many years, he has conducted awareness campaigns through public meetings, radio talks, television appearances, school and college lectures, and newspaper articles. He has educated people about stroke prevention, epilepsy awareness, dementia care, Parkinson’s disease, rabies prevention, headaches, autism, and brain infections. He has published nearly 400 articles focused on public awareness, making him one of the rare specialists who actively bridge the gap between doctors and society.
As an educator, Dr. Meshram has made remarkable contributions. He served as Course Director of the WFN-IAN Neuro Infection Webinar Series, an educational initiative focused on neurological infections. He also organized numerous national and international conferences and conducted Continuing Medical Education programs on six topics every year for eleven years. In addition, he initiated neurology departmental visits in India for students from poorer Asian countries, giving them opportunities for learning and exposure. Such efforts demonstrate his commitment to sharing knowledge across borders.
His academic achievements are equally impressive. Dr. Meshram has served as Assistant Editor of the international journal eNeurologicalSci and section editor of the Encyclopedia of Neurosciences. He has authored 63 scientific publications in journals, contributing valuable knowledge to neurological science. He was also the principal investigator for 18 international clinical research trials. Based on these studies, two new medicines received approval from the U.S. FDA for the treatment of epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease. This is a rare and significant contribution to global healthcare.
Beyond medicine, Dr. Meshram has been deeply involved in social and cultural causes. He has served as trustee of Baba Amte’s Maharogi Seva Samiti, Vidarbha Sahitya Sangh, and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Smarak Samiti Deekshabhoomi, Nagpur. He supports poor but meritorious students through scholarships and sponsors young artists for residential art camps. His concern for both education and culture shows the depth of his social vision.
He is also the founder president of the Orange City Cultural Foundation. Through this platform, he organized six Orange City International Film Festivals, movie appreciation workshops, two Indian film festivals, and several other cultural activities in Nagpur. His work helped enrich the city’s cultural life and provided a platform for artistic expression. In 2018, he was appointed Brand Ambassador of Nagpur for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation.
Over the years, Dr. Meshram has received numerous honours. These include Samman Puraskar by the Income Tax Department, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Jeevan Sadhana Puraskar, Inspiring Neurologist of the Country Award, Professional Icon of Vidarbha Award, Lokmat Times Award for Excellence in Healthcare, Dr. Wankar Gold Medal, and Lifetime Achievement Awards from major medical bodies. His crowning recognition came when he was honoured with the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian awards.
