Prof. Raghuvendra Tanwar: Historian, Scholar and Voice of Modern Indian History

Raghuvendra Tanwar is among India’s most respected contemporary historians and academic administrators. In 1997, he was appointed Professor through open selection, a major recognition of his scholarship and academic merit. He later served in several important administrative roles including Dean of Academic Affairs and Dean of Social Sciences at the university.

His long association with Kurukshetra University made him one of the most influential academic figures in Haryana. Thousands of students and research scholars benefited from his teaching and mentorship. Even after retiring in February 2015 as Professor Emeritus, he remained actively engaged in research and public life.

One of Prof. Tanwar’s most significant contributions has been his work on the Partition of India. He is widely regarded as a leading authority on the history of Punjab during the final decades of British rule and the traumatic events surrounding Partition in 1947. His research focuses not only on political developments but also on the human consequences of Partition, including displacement, violence, and social transformation.

His acclaimed book The Politics of Sharing Power: The Punjab Unionist Party 1923–1947 is considered an important scholarly study of pre-Partition Punjab politics. Through meticulous archival research, he examined how communal harmony and coalition politics functioned in Punjab before Partition altered the region permanently.

Another notable work, Reporting the Partition of Punjab, explored how newspapers and journalists documented one of the greatest tragedies of the twentieth century. His writings are valued because they combine academic depth with readability, allowing ordinary readers to understand complex historical developments.

Prof. Tanwar has also written extensively on Jammu and Kashmir. His book Be Clear Kashmir Will Vote for India challenged many commonly accepted narratives surrounding Kashmir’s accession to India after Independence. Through historical documents and political analysis, he argued that public sentiment in Kashmir during the late 1940s strongly supported integration with India. The work generated significant discussion among scholars, policymakers, and political observers.

In addition to his scholarly works, he has contributed to broader public understanding of history through lectures, essays, exhibitions, and conferences. He believes history should not remain confined to universities but should become part of public discourse. His exhibitions and public talks have often focused on civilizational continuity, India’s freedom struggle, and national integration.

After retirement, Prof. Tanwar continued to hold important institutional responsibilities. In 2016, he was appointed Director of the Haryana Academy of History and Culture. Under his leadership, the academy promoted research into Haryana’s historical and cultural heritage. Several projects documenting regional history, folklore, and historical traditions were encouraged during his tenure.

A major milestone in his public career came in 2022 when he was appointed Chairman of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR), India’s premier institution dedicated to historical research. The appointment reflected national recognition of his academic stature and commitment to objective historical scholarship. Later, his tenure as ICHR Chairman was extended for another term beginning in 2025.

As Chairman of ICHR, Prof. Tanwar has emphasized evidence-based research and wider participation in historical studies. He has encouraged historians to revisit neglected areas of Indian history and promote balanced academic inquiry. His leadership has also focused on bringing regional histories and indigenous perspectives into mainstream historical discussions.

Apart from administrative roles, Prof. Tanwar has remained deeply involved in academic conferences and intellectual debates. He has presided over important academic bodies including the Indian History Congress and the Punjab History Conference. These positions reflect the respect he commands among historians across India.

His achievements have been recognized through several awards and honours over the years. These include the UGC National Fellowship, research grants, and leadership positions in national academic institutions. However, the highest public recognition came with the Padma Shri award in 2022. The honour acknowledged not only his scholarship but also his contribution to preserving India’s historical consciousness.

Despite his stature, Prof. Tanwar is known for his simple lifestyle and grounded personality. Colleagues and students often describe him as approachable, disciplined, and deeply committed to intellectual honesty. His wife, Prof. Reicha Tanwar, is also an accomplished academic in gender studies, and together they represent a family devoted to education and scholarship.

In recent years, he has continued participating in national seminars and cultural discussions. During a major international conference at Kurukshetra University in 2026, he spoke about Kurukshetra’s historical and civilizational significance while also receiving the “Kurukshetra University Itihas Ratna Award” for his contribution to Indian history.
