Dr. R. V. Dr. Ramanathan V. Ramani was born on 24 July 1947 in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. He grew up in a family deeply committed to medical service. His father, Dr. A. Ramanathan, was among the city’s pioneering physicians and earned immense respect for serving patients during the plague outbreak of the 1940s. Watching his father’s commitment to society inspired young Ramani to pursue medicine from an early age.

He completed his schooling in Coimbatore before joining Kasturba Medical College, where he graduated with distinction and received recognition as the Best Outgoing Student. His medical education laid the foundation for a career that would eventually influence community healthcare across India.

Beginning of a Noble Mission

After completing his medical studies, Dr. Ramani and his wife, Dr. Radha Ramani, returned to Coimbatore and established the Dr. Ramanathan Memorial Clinic. The clinic quickly became popular for its patient-centred approach.

Despite their successful private practice, the couple felt a greater calling to serve people who lacked access to quality healthcare. In 1977, they established the Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Medical Centre, supported by volunteers and fellow physicians. This initiative later evolved into the Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Medical Trust, dedicated exclusively to charitable healthcare activities.

Establishment of Sankara Eye Foundation India

The turning point came in the mid-1980s when Dr. Ramani decided to focus exclusively on ophthalmology and community eye care. This vision gave birth to Sankara Eye Foundation India, which operates under the philosophy of delivering “World-Class Eye Care with a Social Impact.”

Today, Sankara Eye Hospitals form one of India’s largest charitable eye care networks. The organisation has expanded across multiple states, operating super-speciality hospitals, vision centres, eye banks, and educational institutions that collectively provide treatment to millions of patients every year.

A Sustainable Healthcare Model

One of Dr. Ramani’s greatest innovations is the 80:20 healthcare model.

Under this approach:

• Around 80% of patients receive completely free treatment, including surgeries.
• The remaining 20% pay for premium services, helping subsidise treatment for economically weaker patients.

This financially sustainable model has enabled the organisation to maintain high standards of care without compromising its social mission. It has become a globally admired example of social entrepreneurship in healthcare.

Transforming Rural Eye Care

Understanding that millions of rural Indians lacked access to specialist hospitals, Dr. Ramani introduced the Gift of Vision programme in 1990.

Through thousands of rural eye camps, mobile screening units, and telemedicine facilities, doctors identify patients suffering from cataracts and other vision disorders. Eligible patients are transported to Sankara hospitals, treated free of cost, and safely returned to their villages.

The programme has conducted tens of thousands of outreach camps, screened millions of individuals, and restored sight to an extraordinary number of people who otherwise would have remained blind.

Caring for Children

Dr. Ramani also recognised that vision problems among children often go unnoticed, affecting education and overall development.

To address this challenge, Sankara Eye Foundation launched the Rainbow Programme, which screens schoolchildren for vision defects. Children requiring spectacles, medication, or surgery receive timely treatment, helping them perform better academically and improving their quality of life.

Promoting Eye Donation

At a time when awareness about eye donation was extremely limited, he launched extensive public campaigns encouraging people to pledge their eyes after death. His inspiring message—“Do not bury, do not burn, donate eyes”—motivated thousands of families to participate in this noble cause.

Today, Sankara Eye Banks are among India’s leading centres for corneal donation and transplantation, restoring vision to countless individuals suffering from corneal blindness.

To achieve this objective, he helped establish the Sankara Academy of Vision, which provides training for ophthalmologists, optometrists, nurses, administrators, and allied healthcare professionals.
