India Four-Wheeler Sales in October 2026: Maruti Leads as Tata and Mahindra Compete for Second

India’s passenger vehicle market had a strong October, with major manufacturers reporting higher domestic sales than in September. Maruti Suzuki kept the top spot, while Tata Motors narrowly finished ahead of Mahindra for second place. Hyundai, Kia and several other brands also recorded month-on-month growth.

The October figures arrive during an important buying period for the auto industry. Navratri and Dussehra fell in October, while Dhanteras and Diwali came in November. This timing may have spread festive purchases across the two months. The figures show strong momentum for several manufacturers, though performance varied across brands.

September’s Honda figure includes domestic sales and exports; it is not directly comparable with the October registration figure. The table’s figures and comparisons are compiled by Autocar India.

Maruti Suzuki sets the pace

Maruti Suzuki sold 2,12,384 passenger vehicles in October, more than any other manufacturer in the table. That was a 25.86% increase over September and 20.46% higher than in October 2025.

The company’s October performance formed part of a record month overall. Maruti reported total sales of 2,76,120 units across its domestic, original equipment manufacturer and export categories. Its official release said domestic sales also reached an all-time high, though that broader domestic figure includes sales to other manufacturers. Maruti Suzuki’s October release

Maruti’s lead in the passenger vehicle table remained substantial: its reported sales were almost three times those of the next-ranked company. The result reflects its wide range of hatchbacks, sedans, utility vehicles and MPVs.

Tata edges Mahindra for second place

Tata Motors reported 73,894 domestic passenger vehicle sales, finishing just ahead of Mahindra’s 73,338. The gap was 556 units.

Tata’s sales rose 29.70% from September and 20.87% year on year. The company’s reported electric vehicle sales reached 14,552 units during October. Tata’s EV line-up continues to make the company a significant player in India’s electric passenger vehicle market.

Mahindra, meanwhile, recorded its highest-ever monthly domestic SUV sales, at 73,338 units, according to the report. That was 29.24% above September, but its annual increase was more modest at 2.39%. The comparison shows how different the two companies’ growth rates were: Tata posted a sharper year-on-year rise, while Mahindra achieved a new monthly SUV volume milestone.

Hyundai and Kia grow year on year

Hyundai sold 62,799 passenger vehicles in India during October, an increase of 25.60% from September and 16.74% from October 2025. Its total sales, including exports, were higher than its domestic figure. The Venue was among its stronger performers, with reported monthly sales of 13,017 units.

Kia recorded 33,462 domestic sales, up 4.51% month on month and 13.22% year on year. It also surpassed its previous monthly sales record, which had been set in September. The Seltos and Sonet were key contributors, according to the sales report.

Mixed results among other manufacturers

Toyota sold 29,521 passenger vehicles domestically. Its total increased 6.76% from September, but it was down 26.67% compared with October 2025. That steep annual decline stands apart from most of the manufacturers in the table.

Skoda Auto Volkswagen India recorded 9,083 passenger vehicle registrations, a 10.07% year-on-year rise. JSW MG Motor India recorded 7,014 units, up 9.65% year on year. Electric vehicles accounted for a large share of MG’s October registrations, according to Autocar India.

Nissan reported 3,600 units, nearly 50% more than in October last year. Renault recorded 4,577 domestic sales: an increase from September, but a 9.20% decline year on year. Honda Cars India’s October figure was 5,429 registrations, lower than the 6,394 recorded in October 2025. Its September total included exports, so the month-on-month comparison needs care.

What the October figures tell us

The results show a broad month-on-month lift among the larger manufacturers listed. Tata, Mahindra, Maruti and Hyundai all reported increases of more than 25% from September. Festive buying likely contributed, although monthly company sales alone cannot show exactly when customers placed orders or took delivery.

Year-on-year results were more varied. Most companies in the table grew compared with October 2025, while Toyota, Honda and Renault reported declines. The differences reflect each brand’s product mix, sales base and reporting method, so a single monthly comparison does not capture the entire market picture.

The figures also show why it helps to distinguish between passenger vehicles and all four-wheelers. This report covers passenger vehicles such as cars, SUVs and MPVs. It does not include commercial vehicles such as trucks and buses. In addition, some figures represent manufacturer dispatches to dealers, while others are registrations. These measures describe different stages of the sale process and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Overall, October was a strong month for several passenger vehicle makers. Maruti Suzuki remained firmly in front, Tata took second place by a narrow margin, and Mahindra recorded a monthly SUV sales record. The next set of monthly results will show whether the festive momentum continued into November.
